Hey Cathy: I ended up getting a Canon G9. It has a nice big view finder and makes those cool stop motion videos that I saw Shareski make of preparing dinner one night. Now I'm just getting used to the settings. I'm happier with setting the ISO options, lighting options, and flash settings than with auto mode. I have all vacation to play around though. Have a great vacation break!

@John Woodring--yes I had heard/read that too about the minidvd cameras. I want to say that Mac editing programs will handle .mov just fine, though. I'll have to inquire with my resident expert son when he comes in. He is strictly mac and is majoring in college in film/animation & special effects.

I just had a discussion with a teacher about this. Our school has DVD camcorders and I would recommend not purchasing one of these. The DVD's come in the .mov format which requires a third party application to convert to avi or any other file. This means you cannot edit the video using Windows Movie Maker or any other software video editor.

Regarding storage of pictures. I store my pictures temporarily on my hard drive then upload to flickr. This is a great tool for anyone that takes loads of pictures. I have thousands of high quality photos that are not stored on my hard drive now.

Wow Sue--I can honestly say I've never used video off a still digital camera, not since the Sony Mavica (brick on a leash, as Leslie Fisher is fond of saying) and those videos were BAD! I am definitely going to investigate this further to see how well the videos play and look quality wise. Since the camera picture quality has dramatically improved, i don't know why I haven't thought their video capability might have improved too. Thanks again.

Hi Cathy - I totally agree with you regarding the Mini-DV video cameras. Much easier to use. I own one personally but most in my organisation are Hard Drive digital video camera which participants will bring along to our workshops. We end up having problems with the hard drive versions because suddenly they will say need to be reformatted or we will need to install the software to be able to transfer the video onto the computer. Whereas the Mini-DV video cameras you just attached to your computer, open up Movie Maker and then capture video.

However if you are only wanting to create short videos I mostly suggest using a digital camera switched to video mode. My preferred camera is Canon because it uses a mini-USB cable which is the same cable that I use with my PDA and digital video recorder. Also it records in .avi format so there is no need to convert to a format suitable for editing with Movie Maker.
