I caught this in my RSS reader today. Recently with my kids we discussed how RSS feeds were initially used only by the news wires–enabling newspapers and other news media to jump on and use stories for papers, magazines, and television productions. I am going to use this during the week with some of my classes. I posted it on the library blog. But it also reminds me of how many (many, many, many) times I have posted to my own blog, twitter, and even in chatrooms the txt talk or spelling issues that I dismiss either due to my now 3 month old eye surgery or my inability to type using a laptop. Will I forgive Fox? Of course! The actual article is after all, error free. Can’t wait to share with the kids at school though.

    Cathy,

All of us make casual mistakes when trying to get our thoughts down quickly.

But there should be some extra care taken with “professional” journalism!

I remember a headline about two horses in a “dual” for first place and wonder daily if anyone at our local newspaper understands the difference between “there”, “their” and “they’re”; or when to use “it’s” rather than “its”.

Some students shrug off this type of correction, but I warn them that, fair or not, they will be judged by their speech as well as their appearance when they leave school.

The editor in me easily sees the typos and errors in the work of others, but I am amazed and sometimes horrified when I post something and then see the mistake as I re-read it and I know it is too late to correct it.
Diane is right - we as educators should reinforce with our students (and sometimes the staff that we workwith, too!) the correct spelling and usage of common words that are often misused grammatically.

Oh jeepers girls, I am the world’s worst at reinforcing this, especially since i am one of the biggest offenders who typically dismisses these minor typos. Word processors have made me a lazy speller. I promise to do better.
